As a protective layer surrounding the brain, the blood-brain barrier’s main purpose is to prevent harmful agents from reaching the brain. Research has shown that certain methods can be used to create a passageway through the barrier in order to allow therapeutic agents to reach their target.
In a study published in September of 2018, NAD⁺ was administered through Intraperitoneal Injection and Intravenous injection in mice. The injections demonstrated that NAD⁺ crosses the blood-brain barrier to enter the hypothalamus intact, in mice.
